Vienna, July 2009: The German Federal Government is allocating funds amounting to over US-$ 2.8 million for UNODC projects in July 2009. The funds are earmarked inter alia for the promotion of the rule of law, human security, border control and the fight against trafficking in persons in South-East Europe (US-$ 2.0 million), drug demand reduction in Iran (US-$ 0.5 million) as well as capacity building for drug demand reduction in Afghanistan (US-$ 0.34 million).

From 11 to 20 March 2009 the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs convened in Vienna for the 52nd time to discuss global drug policy. The beginning of the meeting was marked by a political declaration delivered by high-level representatives of member states. Among the key points were the treatment of addiction and the joint fight against black markets and drug-related crime.

147 Nations meet in Vienna to discuss the fight against organized crime

Vienna, 8 - 17 October 2008: A high-level conference of the 147 countries that are Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime will review the implementation of this convention and its three Protocols (Trafficking in Persons, Smuggling of Migrants, and Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms). Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT)

New York, 24 September 2008: To date over 2,000 nuclear weapon tests have been carried out worldwide. The German government is working towards the goal of ensuring that nuclear tests are banned worldwide. This is the aim of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which has not yet entered into force. Foreign Ministers of more than 40 countries in support of the CTBT met in New York on the margins of the UN General Assembly.

The Foreign Office was deeply involved in the crimes of the Third Reich. This is revealed in a report by an international Independent Commission of Historians, who presented their study to Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle at the Federal Foreign Office on 28 October 2010. The Minister said the study would from now “play an essential role in the debates about the self-perception of the Federal Foreign Office and German diplomats”. He added that it was important to take the right steps now in response to the study’s findings on the Foreign Office’s involvement in Nazi crimes and on staff continuity after the Second World War.

UN Convention on Biological Diversity 2008 in Bonn: It’s about our future

From May 19th to May 30th the city of Bonn was the venue for the largest-ever environmental conference to be held in Germany. The UN Convention on Biological Diversity attracted a broad spectrum of around 5,000 delegates to the Rhine, including representatives from states, governments and from non-governmental organisations along with economic observers. The gathering addressed one of the key environmental issues of our age, namely the conservation of biological diversity and ways to ensure a sustainable use of the earth’s resources.
